Measure P Frequently Asked Questions

Tahoe-Truckee Unified School District’s (TTUSD) primary mission is to provide a high-quality education to approximately 4,000 local students. The District operates 10 schools across the Truckee, North Lake Tahoe, and West Shore communities, serving families residing in Nevada, Placer, and El Dorado counties. Multiple TTUSD schools have been recognized as a California Distinguished School, reflecting the district’s strong academics, innovative programs, and success preparing students for college, careers, and beyond.

Yes. Since 1989, voters have approved local school parcel tax funding that represents over 5% of the school district budget. This funding supplements funding from the State that only supports a basic education. Locally controlled parcel tax funding helps TTUSD attract and retain qualified and experienced teachers, maintain manageable class sizes, and support quality academic and job training programs that help prepare students for success in college and the workforce. Unless renewed by voters, this parcel tax funding will expire soon and over $5 million may need to be cut from the budget, which could lead to teacher layoffs, cuts to academic programs, and increased class sizes.

To help prevent cuts to teaching and academic programs, the TTUSD Board of Education has voted to place Measure P on the November 3, 2026, ballot, which would renew the current $148 annual parcel tax rate and increase it by $40 to account for inflation since the last renewal in 2018, for a total of $188. 

If approved, Measure P would continue funding for 9 years and provide approximately $7 million annually in locally controlled school funding to: 

• Support programs in science, technology, engineering and math
• Attract and retain highly qualified teachers
• Maintain career and technical education and job training programs for in-demand fields like health sciences and skilled trades
• Maintain manageable class sizes

Measure P would remain in effect for 9 years and would then automatically expire unless renewed by voters.

Measure P would continue strict fiscal provisions, oversight, and transparency protections, including:

• All money raised would stay local and could not be taken by the state or federal governments
• An independent oversight committee, annual audits, and public spending disclosure would continue to help ensure funds are spent as promised
• Funds could not be used for administrator salaries
• Homeowners age 65 and older would continue to be eligible for an exemption and do not need to reapply
• Low-income homeowners with disabilities would be eligible for an exemption

If existing parcel tax funding expires, TTUSD would have to cut approximately $5 million from its annual budget. This would likely mean cuts to academic programs and teacher and school staff layoffs.

Yes. Homeowners age 65 and over would continue to be eligible for an exemption from the cost and would not need to reapply for an exemption.

The only other type of exemption allowed for in state law is an exemption for low income homeowners with disabilities who qualify for federal SSI or SSDI benefits.

Measure P must receive approval from two-thirds (66.67%) of voters casting ballots on the measure to pass.

Measure P will be on the November 3, 2026 statewide General Election ballot.
