Keeping Our Kids and Schools Safe: Your Guide to the Hazard Mitigation Plan

What is the Hazard Mitigation Plan?

The 2026 Tahoe Truckee Unified School District Hazard Mitigation Plan (HMP) is about keeping our students and schools safe from natural disasters. Think of it as our community's game plan to reduce the risks from things like wildfires, floods, or earthquakes.

District leaders, staff, families, community members, and local agencies will work together to figure out what risks we face, what resources we have, and what steps we can take to make our schools stronger and safer.

Why Do We Need This Plan?

Having an HMP allows our district to apply for special funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This money helps us make improvements to our schools to protect them from natural disasters.

How We're Building the Plan: Our 8 Steps

Creating the Hazard Mitigation Plan is a thorough process. Here's a quick look at the steps we'll be taking:

  1. Gathering Our Tools: We'll collect related studies, plans and reports, and build a team of district representatives, community members, and local agencies.
  2. Understanding the Risks: We'll identify potential natural and human-caused hazards that could affect our schools and community, looking at past events, and figuring out how likely they are to happen again.
  3. Reaching Out to You: We will create ways to keep you informed and involved, including social media updates, brochures, and public meetings.
  4. Checking Our Strengths: We'll look at our current resources and abilities in areas like emergency management, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), planning and regulatory authority, finances, and community outreach.
  5. Creating Our Strategy: We're defining our goals, what actions we'll take, and prioritizing projects to reduce our vulnerability.
  6. Keeping it Current: This plan is a living document! We'll set up a schedule to review and update throughout the five year life of the plan.
  7. Drafting the Plan: We'll put all the information together into a comprehensive draft that meets federal and state requirements.
  8. Finalizing and Adopting: The draft plan will be available for public comments before it's sent to state and federal agencies for approval. Once approved, it will be officially adopted by the district.
