Bell schedules for 2022-2023
There is no change to TTUSD’s bell schedules for the 2022-2023 school year. Each school site has its bell schedule posted on its website under "our school" or under the "parents & students" tab.
Here is some background info as to the why.
Governor Newsom passed a law, Senate Bill 328 back in 2019 which requires all non-rural middle schools and high schools (including charter schools), no later than July 1, 2022, to begin the regular school day before 8:00 a.m.(middle schools) or 8:30 a.m.(high schools).
While we are considered a rural district, and therefore exempt, TTUSD completed a comprehensive evaluation of considering later school start times for our district. In December of 2018, the TTUSD Committee to Consider Later Starts for Secondary Schools was formed and consisted of 26 stakeholders. This balanced committee was made up of stakeholders including parents, students, teachers, community members, a DELAC (District English Language Advisory Committee) representative, and administrators, all of whom represent a variety of viewpoints. The committee was tasked with evaluating the potential of changing school start times and ultimately making a recommendation to the board.
Part of their work included surveying parents, middle and high school students, and staff. We received over 2,500 responses (1,118 parents responded, 1,189 middle and high school students responded, and 248 of our staff responded).
In summary, they found that while many supported a change in school schedules, the responses were extremely divided. After careful evaluation of the benefits and impacts identified for students and families, the committee felt that the magnitude of the negative impacts was far too significant. Their recommendation to the board on May 1, 2019, was that no changes to the bell schedules be made at this time. The board unanimously approved the committee’s recommendation and thanked the committee members and the co-chairs for all their time, energy, and hard work in their evaluation process.
