Public Safety Power Outages Planned En Español: Cortes de Electricidad de Seguridad Pública Planificados
North Lake Tahoe and Truckee and our surrounding areas are currently in an extreme wildfire season.
Our energy providers are implementing wildfire safety de-energization programs called Public Safety Outage Management (PSOM) and Planned Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS’s). Our utility providers would de-energize transmission lines that deliver power to North Lake Tahoe and Truckee based on catastrophic wildfire risk. The de-energization programs are similar to PG&E’s Planned Safety Power Shutoffs that are implemented in extreme fire-risk areas during the wildfire season.
TTUSD has been notified that our energy providers may turn off electricity throughout our school district when extreme fire danger conditions are forecast. Dangerous conditions include red flag warnings, low humidity, high winds, and dry conditions.

Truckee residents are encouraged to register for Nixle emergency alerts, in addition to CodeRED, which serves unincorporated Eastern Nevada County and all Western Nevada County.
The Truckee Police Department and Truckee Fire Protection District utilize the Nixle Everbridge Emergency Alert System as the primary method of communication during critical incidents which take place within the Town of Truckee and Truckee Fire Protection District limits. Residents are encouraged to subscribe to stay informed in an evolving event.

Timing of a planned power outage?
While these kinds of events can be unpredictable, our energy providers have committed to notifying the public as far in advance as possible. Please note that planned power outages could last as long as 24-48 hours!
What does this mean for your child’s school day?
When we are notified in advance of an upcoming de-energization event, we will communicate this with you right away. You will receive an email and text message from your school’s principal if your child’s school is impacted by the outage or a district-wide message.
If we know there will not be power at a school on a given day, we will call it a “power day.” You will be notified the same way as we do with a snow day. Like snow days, power days will be added to the school year calendar and made up at the end of the school year.
How will you be notified of alterations to school days?
In the event of a school closure, we will notify students, families, and staff with as much advance notice as possible. We will notify through several communication platforms: a robocall, email, text, and posts to our websites, social media accounts, and our TTUSD app.
TTUSD must have a current parent, guardian, and emergency contact information in our student information system so that we can notify you. Please contact your school’s office to update your contact information if it has changed.
How are schools equipped to manage a power shut-off?
TTUSD is not equipped to operate during extended power outages. These types of outages impact operational capabilities, air circulation in our buildings, lighting inside, and instructional effectiveness.
Our District leaders are in close contact with North Tahoe and Truckee’s Emergency Services personnel and are informed of decisions that may impact public safety, including extended power outages. District leaders will communicate all necessary information with staff and families at all of our schools and worksites. Please note that we have backup communication systems that allow principals and District staff to receive and send emergency information.
